Fifty years after Welles and Welles: distribution and genetic structure of desert bighorn sheep in Death Valley National Park
نویسندگان
چکیده
The status of desert bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis nelsoni) populations in the mountains around Death Valley was first evaluated in 1938, shortly after designation of Death Valley National Monument. However, the most comprehensive evaluation of bighorn sheep in the region was conducted by Ralph and Florence Welles during 1955-1961. They documented patterns of use at water sources and other focal areas around Death Valley and roughly estimated numbers of bighorn sheep from observational data. Data collection on bighorn sheep in the area since that time has lacked a regional approach needed to address metapopulation questions. Epps-DesertBighorns ToPrint_Layout 1 5/26/16 3:36 PM Page 71

متن کاملLocal Extinction and Unintentional Rewilding of Bighorn Sheep (Ovis canadensis) on a Desert Island
Bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) were not known to live on Tiburón Island, the largest island in the Gulf of California and Mexico, prior to the surprisingly successful introduction of 20 individuals as a conservation measure in 1975. Today, a stable island population of ∼500 sheep supports limited big game hunting and restocking of depleted areas on the Mexican mainland. We discovered fossil du...
متن کاملDetection of bacterial-reactive natural IgM antibodies in desert bighorn sheep populations
Ecoimmunology is a burgeoning field of ecology which studies immune responses in wildlife by utilizing general immune assays such as the detection of natural antibody. Unlike adaptive antibodies, natural antibodies are important in innate immune responses and often recognized conserved epitopes present in pathogens. Here, we describe a procedure for measuring natural antibodies reactive to bact...

متن کاملCause Specific Mortality of Desert Bighorn Sheep Lambs in the Fra Cristobal Mountains, New Mexico, Usa
Bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) herds have suffered recent declines across their previous range, and desert bighorn sheep (O. c. mexicana) are listed as an endangered species in New Mexico. One factor affecting growth rates of these populations is low and variable lamb recruitment. Capturing and radio-collaring lambs can provide opportunities for collecting valuable information on factors poten...
